There are times when 24 hours a day are not enough to squeeze in all that you want to do and all that needs to be done. And when you’re a professional with responsibilities on the job that cannot be put off because you are not your own boss, life becomes that much harder because you’re juggling too many balls in the air. So with your personal and professional lives taking up all your time, you have hardly any to devote to health and fitness. But then, without health, you don’t really have a life. So even if you’re the busiest professional in the world, you need to squeeze exercise into your day. And if you’re looking for easy ways to do this, read on:
- Avoid the elevator: Your workplace probably has more than one of these and you’re definitely going to be taking one up or down to your office more than once a day. Instead, try walking up and down the stairs. It will take a little more time, but you’ll be surprised at the difference it makes to your weight, health and fitness.
- Park far away: Don’t choose the parking spot closest to your building; instead, park as far as you can so that you are forced to walk for at least five minutes or more both ways, on your way into work, and back on your way home.
- Move around: Even if your job is sedentary and requires you to be seated most of the time, get up from your desk and move around every hour or so. This not only prevents you from becoming stiff and suffering back and neck aches, it also helps boost your metabolism and helps you lose weight faster. So take a walk around your office every once in a while, even if it’s only to pass on a message to your coworker that you would normally send through email or IM.
- Eat breakfast: When you skip breakfast because you woke up late and you’re rushing to get to the office on time, you tend to fill up on coffee and other snacks like doughnuts that are not healthy and that make you overweight. Besides, you’re also low on energy and you feel irritable all through the day. And when lunch time comes, you tend to eat more than you should and because of this, end up feeling lethargic and sleepy the whole afternoon. When you eat a healthy breakfast every day, you avoid this adverse chain of consequences.
- Avoid stress: I know it’s easier said than done, but you must make a conscious effort to not let stress affect you. You may have problems at work, but if you’re stressed out because of them, you’re risking bigger problems with your health and even your life. Stress is the biggest killer of them all, worse than a poor diet or a routine without exercise.
- Get enough sleep: You may have flexible work hours, but try hard to work through the mornings and leave when the sun goes down. You need to unwind before you get ready for bed so that your sleep is peaceful and undisturbed. So make it a point to stick to regular work hours as much as possible, and go to bed and wake up at the same times every day.
Fitness need not be the uphill climb it’s made out to be; very often, it’s the simple things that help you stay healthy and fit.

Thanks Phil!
Excellent advice -all of it! Which tip is the hardest for you to follow? Getting enough sleep can be a killer for me! I'm not a morning person, but HAVE to get up early. Still, being a night person I want to stay up late no matter how early I got up. I'll keep pluggin' away!
