The number of individuals who undergo surgery for suspected lung cancer, only to find that they have harmless lung disease, varies wildly from state to state. In Vermont, only 1.2 percent of those undergoing surgery were found to have only lung disease, compared with as many as 25 percent in Hawaii. These statistics and the variances between states may lead to changes in screening procedures.
