What am I doing wrong?
I'm really only feeling this exercise in my arms. My legs are comfortable enough, though if I widen the stance and squat more I can manage to feel the burn. I've noticed that others have commented on the fact that this exercise seems to work the abs, which I really do not feel. I also have difficulty with the hip movement. It doesn't come naturally to me, and often switches to moving the opposite side hip out with each punch... is that the cause for my lack of ab targeting? Is there any way to make the hip shifting more a natural part of the exercise?
Legs
Hi Eruwenn,
Yes, understanding this basic stance is much harder than it would seem. Believe it or not Martial artists actually spend years "Getting it".
However you don't have to get it as much as them right now to get the benefits.
Couple of things
1) Make sure your toes are not pointed outward. You want your feet at least parrallel and possibly even a little pigeon toed. This way when you bend your knees you'll feel outward pressure on the ground. If your toes are out the pressure is on the knee joints which feels easier but is not good for you. You should really start to feel gluts, hams, quads, and calves.
2) Bend your knees.
3) Hip rotation is good even if one hip is moving backward. Ideally you should have one hip moving forward and the other stationary but this takes a long time to develop. Just getting those hips rotating in the direction of the punches will do a lot of good.
4) In this exercise abs are just stabilizer muscles. You tighten them to stabilize the core but your going to feel this more in the legs if done correctly.
These stances, if done correctly will really work the gluts in a way no other exercise does.
Hope that helps
Argh.
This is harder to coordinate than the serving tea exercise! When I concentrate on moving my hips in tandem with my punches (right hip moving forward with right hand) instead of doing the opposite (right hip moving forward with left hand), I wind up either losing my grip on the floor (perhaps I shouldn't be wearing socks on smooth flooring?) or arching backwards in order to not lose my balance, which totally throws any sense of alignment to the winds.
One of these years I will get it. Until then, onwards goes the struggle!
No socks on smooth floor
Take your socks off, this will help you engage the muscles in the feet properly. I actually had a cardio student who was uncoordinated and shy, she used to practice the routines in the shower! I had to convince her this wasn't a good idea, lol.
Involving the whole body
Very energizing and I can feel it all over my body. I especially like these that concentrate on keeping the abs strong. After my last baby, this is exactly what I need. Thank you so much Liz and Phil!
this makes me feel like I'm dancing

Best All-Round
I like the workout this gives my upper body, my legs and hips, my heart/resp. rate, and my pent-up aggressions from talking to goofy vendors at work! If you could find a way to somehow combine it with shopping my life would be complete...
Visualize
So we know who you visualize while doing it :-)
We'll work on the shopping thing.
