Hi there! Hm...where to begin? I've got a mixed history with fitness and nutrition. I used to be an ACE certified instructor in college, ran cross country in high school (which started as a dare), and I'm in the Army National Guard. I gained weight while deployed -- too much easy access to fried food. Then I married my great husband, who is naturally skinny and loves mayonnaise on everything. By this point, at 26, I was 20 pounds heavier than my college weight (158 vs. 138). I went on Jenny Craig when I started law school. Whether it was law school stress or Jenny Craig, I got down to 129. I'm 5'2", so I was buying clothes in the girls department! Three years later, I'm now 165. I fell into a rut of taking too many liberties with eating. Among other things, I want to increase my overall activity level. I'm hoping Break Pal will help with those baby steps that show enough change to spur those bigger activities.

As for Workplace Wellness, I got interested in this after researching employment law and mental health. Stress is the root cause of many mental health issues in the workplace. I thought it was so obvious to see the connections between increased profits, productivity, and lower workplace stress. I wrote this up in my research paper, and my professor laughed at me because even if it's true, it was such a preposterous thing to believe that employers would implement proactive stress reduction programs. Well....I'm now taking a break from that law school and am studying organizational psychology. This is one area that I'm pretty adamant about and want to change it. I'm hoping this group will at least motivate me to keep my interests up, if not give me more ideas.

Welcome

I think you two will get along great and help motivate each other.

Your professor was obviously not up with the times. Employers are implementing proactive stress reduction programs. Although it is a very recent thing. We regularly recieve inquires from large corporations who are just dipping their foot in the water of workplace wellness. They are realizing the impact on the bottom line.

Of course there are companies that have known this for years and have measurable productivity increases in the range of 20%.

We'd love for you to share your expertise on the subject here on the site. Feel free to post blog entries on it or talk about it here in the group.

For stress reduction I would highly recommend the chi kung exercises. Most of the exercises here on break pal are mind body oriented (which is known to be a great stress reducer) hover I feel the chi kung is the best.

Thanks Phil,

for recommending me as a friend!
Sincerely Kathy
